Ahhh....the Super Trio.

Friday Night In San Francisco by these guys was one of the things that turned me on to "jazz" or instrumental guitar way back in the 80's.

Just came across a very cool quote from AL Di Meola a couple of moths ago. According to him, they always had to keep the arrangements "simple" because Paco De Lucia wasn't able to read!!!! So virtuosity...yes...but the other lesson to be learned is that all great players have weaknesses too.

Peterk, same here. It was these guys, but especially Al DiMeola and the frighteningly blazing and precise picking stuff that first attracted me over to "fusion" and then eventually Berklee and traditional jazz, etc...

Paco may not have been able to read, but he was playing this hyper-flamenco stuff with his damned fingertips!!

Anyway, I eventually drifted away from the speed craze at some point. But I wonder what people think about guys like Al nowadays: all flash and no substance?

Even Al has recognized the limits of hyper-speed. His World Sinfonia stuff is nice, tasteful. However, none of the three in the Super Trio have anything like classical guitar training or backgrounds, just to clarify.

nice vid if you'd also like to see classic/jazz-virtuosity at the piano go and check out 'Eugene Cicero' ... he has some funny stuff like "sunny" mixed up with classic tunes

and on his CD's and most other youtube vid's are classical pieces getting "jazzified" by his trio like "Bach's Softly Sunrise" !

(Don't mix him up with a guy called "Roger Cicero" ... that's his son, being a (in my opinion) 2nd class swing singer ...)
