whew, tabs for that?

you might want to check out joe's books on chord melody playing, if you dig what joe does. as for finding a note for note transcription of what joe's doing with ella, your best bet might be to find a college student who's doing some serious transcribing...but even then, not sure if you'd be getting tablature...

Best bet is learning from Joe's book and using the concepts on some of your favorite standards.

Last year I spent some time transcribing the Joe & Ella version of 'Cry Me a River', but to be honest I got bored with it and never finished. You are probably better off learning the changes, and transcribing parts you like from a particular song rather than trying to learn his stuff note-for-note.

Hi, don't you know "hello" or "please" words ?
People these days...

Anyway, I think you can find some on the LickByNeck web page, I practiced one a few months ago, but I'm not sure it was one with Ella. The playing is quite the same so you can pick up ideas.

peace

It may be counterproductive to learn JP's accompanyment using tabs or transcriptions since accompanying a vocalist is more about spontaneous communication with the singer's individual feel and style. It may not translate to other singers that well.

I think a better approach is to memorize the tune's chord progression and try to use your own chord voicings. This will let you listen more and develop an ability to adapt to the singer in a spontaneous way. Once you internalize the tune you will see opportunities to sneak more rhythmic and harmonic content into the accompanyment....

Of course it sure doesn't hurt to study how JP fits in with Ella...its pure magic.

Hi Gravy Train,
The female singer in my band & I picked the idea of playing Cry me a river, so if you have some transcriptions already, I would be most grateful! She is no Ella (Caucasian female, and I am definitively no Joe Pass, although I play an Epiphone as well, Emperor Regent). I know its in A7 (A+) and some F# chords, but that's all I have.

Regards,
Erwin

There's a transcription of the guitar part from the version recorded by Julie London with Barney Kessell-no slouch in th picking department himself:
Cry Me a River

Yeah, as far as backing a singer by yourself, Joe wrote the book, but Barney added a few chapters too. Today, Tuck and Patty are probably the best example of this that I can think of. If you have not checked out Tuck Andress and his wife Patty, you should. However, unless a publisher has done it, tabs are pretty scarce in jazz. Need to read music. Good luck with it.

Yeah, they are pretty nice together. I think I have an instructional DVD he did someplace, have to look for it. I've been reading music since I was five, so no tabs don't bother me, in fact I generally prefer standard notation.
