I learned to play chord melodies fingerstyle, and I love playing fingerstyle on my classical guitar, but I love the sound of my pick on my electric. Its a huge difference in sound that I just cant live without, especially for single line stuff and soloing. I just have to use a pick.

I can hybrid pick pretty well, but it just seems a little awkward for chord melodies. Anyone have any hybrid picking or regular picking advice for chord melodies? I mean, if your hybrid picking then you fingers are playing the top notes anyways, so whats the point?

I too play classical primarily but have found that I love paying jazz more now.
I bought an Ibanez AEG, single cutaway, nylon string ,electric hybrid. Probably not a great guitar but I can play Bach as well as Jazz with the same flat neck, action, and fingerstyle that I've always played with, so I love it!

I think nylon is a good choice and nails sound better than a pick, better control, and we're more used to the P-I-M-A anyway!!

I use a pick or fingers. Usually for CM's it's a pick. I'm not that adept at the hybrid thing. However I can skip strings pretty well and get a 'fake' fingerpicking sound.

You could also just use your thumb and get a similar sound to a pick. That may work well for you.

If you want to work on a picking excercise to get your picking hand more adept at skipping strings then try playing "Recuerdos De La whatchmacallit" but with a pick. No fingers. Start slow.

This helped me get better control of my picking hand so thst I can get a decent 'fingerpicked' sound with a flat pick which helped add a little something to my CM's.

I do all three: pick, hybrid pick, fingerpick. And there's another option -- thumb only, flesh & no nail in my case. Thumb only is a bit like a pick, but I find that it has different tonal qualities and my approach to a CM can change a bit.
