Guitar Anybody tried this chord melody idea: bass + melody?

In short, following the root notes in the bass while playing the melody or improvising (improvising around the melody while doing this sounds nice I think), without harmonizing it with any chords.

I've been trying this out, I can't walk and play a melody... yet... but just hitting the one or leading into it sounds good. Anybody else do this, or have elaborated on this idea? It seems like a good base to start on them move into more chords, as I tried to but couldn't quite do.

I was going to post a video how I used it on All The Things but it didn't work. Anybody know how to add a video without putting it onto youtube first?

Hal Galper talks about this in "Forward Motion". He elaborates on how melody notes that occur on downbeats (1 & 3) provide the skeletal framework the tune itself.

I've been doing this for ten years. I find it actually a lot more audibly palatable, often, then standard chord melody playing, but that's my personal preference. hearing the bass line with the melody is a great step towards deconstructing and understanding the tune.
