It's all about the melody though, you can't just throw substitutions out there without being aware of the melody.
In a tune like Bacharach's "This Guy", where the first two bars have the static melody note A over the F chord (first bar) followed by the same melody note A over Bb maj 7 (where the A becomes the seventh on the Bb maj 7th), you can approach the IV chord (the Bb chord) with a B min7 b5, a B7 #11, or a two five combo like; F# min7 b5 / B7#11, or even Cmin6/B7#11.
In all the above combinations, the chords retain the melody note A. That's the key. |
