I'm playing more brazilian than jazz guitar, although the border is thin and I sometimes play some, but no pick ever !!
Many bossa novas became great jazz standards. Meditation is one, but most often jazz versions are played with the typical piano/bass/drums/sax band.
Pat Metheny & Mick Goodrick - Meditation - YouTube is an exception I guess. However, the guitar chord rythm is very repetitive and often dull. With all due respect, sorry Pat and Mick you weren't born in Brazil
What is typical of the true Brazilian guitar style is the never ending variation of chords, how to play their notes, and of the syncopated rythm. The following provides a very good example of that.
So ...
I recently came across a record by French singer & guitar player Jean Yves Mestre (listen on
Deezer), who does an outstanding guitar job at several standard bossa novas. As a result, I started to transcribe some of his playings.
His slow version of meditation is unusual and exceptionnally good, so I started with it. If interested, you can get a pdf score of his guitar part, an MP3 of it played by Sibelius, and a full version with trumpet and upright bass also played by Sibelius. Drums not yet created as I need to use some other software to do a good job.
My uploads failed for some unclear reason, so here is the 4shared.com location to get them:
4shared folder - Meditação
Let me know if you are interested in some other bossa nova guitar scores as well as MP3 playbacks for them.
