Ralph Towner is definitely one of my favorite guitarists. I've enjoyed his playing for years, both solo and with other artists. "Sargasso Sea" was the first album of his that I heard.

I had the privilege of running sound for him when he came to Seattle in 1973 or so with Paul Stookey did a solo concert at my college. Ralph Towner on guitar and Russ Savakus on bass acoompanied him. In the middle of the concert Paul gave Ralph a solo sppot and he performed a 12-minute piece on the 12-string guitar. It was interesting that Ralph got the biggest ovation that night when he played that piece.

Ralph also plays classical guitar and piano. He has played with "Oregon" and with many other musicians. He is one of a kind in playing guitar.

I used to listen to a lot of Paul Winter Consort and Oregon in the '70s Remember Towner's composition Icarus?

His duo with John Abercrombie is deep. For you beginners out there, you should know that he never even picked up a guitar until he was in his 20's. For you seasoned players, you can cry now.
Get Diary. One half on guitar, one half on piano. Ralph Towner-one of my favourite piano players.

This is going to drive me crazy. Was Icarus used as a TV theme? What program? Help!

EDIT: Is it a standard fill on NPR?

Since 74? Then you remember Weather Report right? He played with them.
He slips by a lot of radars because he tended to play in small acoustic situations. Solo, duo, his group Oregon, and though you'll find him in the jazz section and is well known with John Abercrombie, he's more improvisational chamber music.

His Nardis (live solo) is very impressive. Hell of a good player.

Towner has two books of solos published as well as a Guitar Method [out of print but available as a download PDF].

I have been listening to him since 71. I covered Ralph's Juggler's Etude on my site at;

Billy Stewart | Chapel Hill, NC | Classical / Original / Acoustic | Music, Lyrics, Songs, and Videos | ReverbNation

I would love to hear what anyone thinks of it.

Thanks!
Billy Stewart
