Default Chord Melody

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post: due to an elbow injury a couple of years ago my finger picking is not all it could be. I can still use a pick.

Can you folks point me in the direction of some pick-style Chord Melody players I could get some inspiration from?

All the best,

SP

Try Kenny Burrell (Ballad Essentials), Frank Vignola (Tribute to Gershwin).

Jack Wilkins is pretty amazing with a pick:

Barney Kessel did a lot of pick style chord melody, as does bucky pizzrelli.

Also check out some gypsy jazzers...they love'em some pick.

Mr B got there before me, but I agree 100% about Kessel, plus he is fascinating to transcribe from, you learn a lot about how to get more from well known chord voicings, plus some other tricks of his also.

Thanks for that. I knew about Barney Kessel - 'Solo' is one of my favourite albums and I'm going to check out the others as soon as I've finished typing this.

All the best,

I would definitely add to your list Ted Greene. You can download a ton of his teaching materials and arrangements from the TedGreene.com website. Don't forget to check the "From Students" section wherein it contains helpful notation to Ted's arrangements.

Another wonderful chord-melody guitarist is Kenny Poole - one of the finest.
I'd highly recommend his last recorded concert, "Deep End of the Poole"

Best of luck in your solo jazz guitar journey!
