| | Great jazz love songs Beautiful!
(If you don't know the lyrics to these great standards you are missing out.) Writer(s): Burke/Haggart What's new?
How is the world treating you?
You haven't changed a bit
Lovely as ever, I must admit
What's new?
How did that romance come through?
We haven't met since then
Gee, but it's nice to see you again
What's new?
Probably I'm boring you
But seeing you is grand
And you were sweet to offer your hand
I understand. Adieu!
Pardon my asking what's new
Of course you couldn't know
I haven't changed, I still love you so

| | That's a classic for sure. Here's the one I've been hung up on for a while now.
Once I laughed when I heard you saying that I'd be playing solitaire, uneasy in my easy chair. It never entered my mind. Once you told me I was mistaken, that I'd awaken with the sun and order orange juice for one. It never entered my mind. You have what I lack myself and now I even have to scratch my back myself. Once you warned me that if you scorned me I'd sing the maiden's prayer again and wish that you where there again to get into my hair again. It never entered my mind. |

| | I'm with Mr. B on My One and Only Love.... but I've always like the John Coltrane/ Johnny Hartman version.... the thing that really blows my mind is that the same quartet recorded Crescent and Love Supreme the next year.... they could play anything, in any style and do it just about better than anyone else. The opening chorus before Elvin Jones comes in is just about as pretty as music needs to get..... this is one of top 10 desert island records.... |

| | favorite It's really hard to pick a favorite, but I believe Mr. B picked one of the best with "My One And Only Love". I also would think about "You Go To My Head" in Ab because I think you need to use a lot of the fingerboard to play a nice version of the tune.

| | You ought to hear some of the stuff Helen Merrill did. She sang You're My Thrill, Deep in a Dream (with just Jim Hall) and a bunch of other songs that would melt you in a second. I've done a lot of the ballads written in the 30's and 40's and I can tell you there's way to many great ones to mention. Before I met my wife, I used to play a lot of those ballads at parties. Toward the end of the night, there were couples all over the place stuck together where you couldn't get a business card between them. They went home with each other and I got to go home with my guitar. Those were the depressing days. |

I think Sinatra did it better but I like this version too. (I've spent a lot of time with Julie London's "AROUND MIDNIGHT" CD. She does a great version of "Black Coffee" on there.)

Every honey bee fills with jealousy
When they see you out with me
I don't blame them
Goodness knows
Honeysuckle rose
When you're passin' by,
Flowers droop and sigh
I know the reason why
You're much sweeter
Goodness knows
Honeysuckle rose
Well, don't buy sugar
You just have to touch my cup
You're my sugar
And it's oh so sweet when you stir it up
When I'm takin' sips
From your tasty lips
Seems the honey fairly drips
You're confection
Goodness knows
Honeysuckle rose
Well, don't buy sugar
You just have to touch my cup
You're my sugar
And it's oh so sweet when you stir it up
When I'm takin' sips
From your tasty lips
Seems the honey fairly drips
You're confection
Goodness knows
Honeysuckle rose

| | One of my favorite performances of this Jerome Kern tune with Johnny Mercer's great lyrics http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcfZ3pjRgsg I’m old fashioned, I love the moonlight
I love the old fashioned things
The sound of rain upon a window pane
The starry song that April sings
This years fancies are passing fancies
But sighing sighs, holding hands
These my heart understands
I’m old fashioned but I don’t mind it
That’s how I want to be
As long as you agree
To stay old fashioned with me.
Paul

| | A different take..... heard this when I was 15 and it changed the way I thought about the world.
The other woman finds time to manicure her nails
The other woman is perfect where her rival fails
And she's never seen with pin curls in her hair
The other woman enchants her clothes with french perfume
The other woman keeps fresh cut flowers in each room
There are never toys that's scattered everywhere
And when her baby comes to call
He'll find her waiting like a lonesome queen
Cause when she's by his side
It's such a change from old routine
But the other woman will always cry herself to sleep
The other woman will never have his love to keep
And as the years go by the other woman
Will spend her life alone |

| | My all time favorite lyric-- You Go to My Head
I particularly like the line, "And, you linger like a haunting refrain." How poignant is that? Gorgeous.
You go to my head,
And you linger like a haunting refrain
And I find you spinning round in my brain
Like the bubbles in a glass of champagne.
You go to my head
Like a sip of sparkling burgundy brew
And I find the very mention of you
Like the kicker in a julep or two.
The thrill of the thought
That you might give a thought
To my plea casts a spell over me
Still I say to myself: get a hold of yourself
Can't you see that it can never be?
You go to my head
With smile that makes my temperature rise
Like a summer with a thousand Julys
You intoxicate my soul with your eyes
Tho I'm certain that this heart of mine
Hasn't a ghost of a chance in this crazy romance,
You go to my head.

| | You Go To My Head Hiya Matt, This song is also my personal favorite. Since I have been married to a jazz vocalist for over 50 years, I have heard and backed her up on almost all of the old standards. We both picked this one as our favorite ballad.

| | Hi Wiz-- I envy the relationship you have with you wife musically. What a great thing to play and perform these wonderful songs together. Another one I love, Someone to Watch Over Me.
Lyrics:
There’s a saying old, says that love is blind
Still we’re often told, "seek and ye shall find"
So I’m going to seek a certain lad I’ve had in mind
Looking everywhere, haven’t found him yet
He’s the big affair I cannot forget
Only man I ever think of with regret
I’d like to add his initial to my monogram
Tell me, where is the shepherd for this lost lamb?
There’s a somebody I’m longin’ to see
I hope that he, turns out to be
Someone who’ll watch over me
I’m a little lamb who’s lost in the wood
I know I could, always be good
To one who’ll watch over me
Although he may not be the man some
Girls think of as handsome
To my heart he carries the key
Won’t you tell him please to put on some speed
Follow my lead, oh, how I need
Someone to watch over me
(bridge)
Won’t you tell him please to put on some speed
Follow my lead, oh, how I need
Someone to watch over me

| | Try "Moonglow," a simple song but very nice lyrics ‪Moonglow‬‏ - YouTube
This one has a bonus of a nice guitar accompaniment.
Remember the scene from "Picnic" with William Holden and Kim Novak? Amazing.
"It had to be Moonglow
Way up in the blue
It had to be Moonglow
That led me straight to you.
I still hear you saying
Dear one, hold me fast
And I start in prayhing
Oh Lord, please let this last
We seemed to float right through the air
Heavenly songs seemed to come from everywhere
And now when there's Moonglow
Way up in the blue
I always remember
That Moonglow gave me you" |

I use to sing this one for my mom. She loved it even though I'm not sure it's even fair to call my singing... singing. More like an attempt to sing.
Some day, when I'm awfully low,
When the world is cold,
I will feel a glow just thinking of you...
And the way you look tonight.
Yes you're lovely, with your smile so warm
And your cheeks so soft,
There is nothing for me but to love you,
And the way you look tonight.
With each word your tenderness grows,
Tearing my fear apart...
And that laugh that wrinkles your nose,
It touches my foolish heart.
Lovely ... Never, ever change.
Keep that breathless charm.
Won't you please arrange it ?
'Cause I love you ... Just the way you look tonight. |

| | nice singers and songs, folks.
some of my favourites in there.
The song a robin sings
Through years of endless springs,
The murmur of a brook at e-ven-tide
That ripples by a nook where two lovers hide.
A great symphonic theme,
That's stella by starlight and not a dream.
My heart and i agree
She's ev'ry - thing on earth to me.
A great symphonic theme,
That's stella by starlight and not a dream.
My heart and i agree
She's ev'ry - thing on earth to me.
She's ev'ry - thing
On earth to me.

| | It might be a cliche, but I really love "My Funny Valentine". It's a great celebration of the kind of love that transcends physical appearance.

| | Good thread - a timely reminder that when we play a ballad, it's not just a chord sequence to doodle over.
Here's my nomination for 'great love song' - ‪Nat King Cole-A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square‬‏ - YouTube
The last section is particularly atmospheric -
When dawn came stealing up, all gold and blue
To interrupt our rendez-vous,
I still remember how you smiled and said,
"Was that a dream? Or was it true?"
Our homeward step was just as light
As the dancing of Fred Astaire,
And like an echo far away
A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square
