I'm pretty good at reading music, but the roman numerals in the script is confusing, what does it mean? Is that something specific to guitar?

I= 1st fret; IV= 4th fret? That way? I think I see it. I'm used to piano type music. thanks so much

I just sat in on a (paying!) big band gig w/o a piano player, where the guitar book was mostly piano charts; they've asked me back, but there's no tab......
