Default The End Of A Love Affair

This is me practising and trying to prepare for a Fri/Sat night jazz gig. The backing track is a BIAB realtracks jazz trio but I forgot to mute the guitar part so you may hear some of that in the background. The first chorus is me getting the chords back in my head for the key of Ab. The rest of the choruses are me trying to get to a chord melody and some lead lines. I would appreciate all comments you care to make, I am very serious about getting this song together for tonight.

thanks in advance,

Aside from thinking that a few of your lead lines were a little too far ahead of the beat (right around 5:00 or so) everything good seems in place. I heard some really nice chordal ideas in there...

It's a good tune, one I should play. Thanks for posting.

Default chord melody practise

Thanks Jeff, I will on work your comment about too much anticipation. One of our regular audience members requested that song for tonight and I had to put it in Ab for my wife to sing it. BTW, your new guitar is really nice with a beautiful tone. I know that a good tone really is mostly from the player but having that nice instument helps. Thanks again for your comments,

Howard (wiz)

Great tune, not played nearly enough. I like your style and approach, as I love chordal playing like I love my wife....uhhhh, well, you get the idea. Interesting that you have a kind of Anti-Wes approach; he'd go from single line to octaves to chords to build tension and add voicing. You go the opposite way, from full chords to single lines! Was that intentional? If so, then I would suggest when going from chords to single lines, change the range, volume, or attack on the single note lines as it seemed that they had almost the same "weight" as the chordal parts. There was no feeling of crescendo and diminuendo in the separate parts of the solos, but what you did was great!!!! LOTS of nice lines! Also, Mr. Pizzarelli has an outstanding chordal arrangement of this tune here well worth the bucks:

Default End Of A Love Affair

jseaberry: thank you for your very kind comments & suggestions for my chord melody approach. I usually don't practice single string lines when I am learning a chord melody. I dearly love chordal sounds and I know my old style and approach is probably derived from music from the 40's thru the 70's. I sometimes find it difficult to express my "feel" for a song with BIAB backing and no live audience, hence my practise sessions are often lacking in self expression, but more into experimenting with chord voicings and getting familiar with the melody. I am primarily an ear player for both comping and improvising with chords or single lines. Also, I am having to provide more intro's and endings lately because our keyboard player is leaving the group.

thanks again for your input,
wiz

I love your style and your playing very much. It is NOT dated by any means, but generally overlooked as it is harder than wanking a pentatonic one note at a time!!!
