Default Solo or Group?

I'm an OK chord melody player, and I have about 2 hours worth of material that I can do as a solo performer. But I don't really enjoy it all that much. I prefer to play with others, even if it's just a duo. There's that collaborative synergy thing, which to me is what making music - especially improvisational music - is all about. What about you?

I like both, but my main gig has been solo for the past six or seven years. And I prefer solo when I'm singing, rather than just playing guitar. Just started a duo with a female singer and guitarist/pianist (so that'll be two guitars and two voices) that is showing some promise.

I like playing live with others, that's a bigger "thrill," but as you all know, I do a lot of solo stuff. The solo stuff is for me, really, I like just sitting down and making music, melody and accompanyment, and I like the fact that the guitar allows me to that.

So when I'm doing solo gigs it's pretty much how I'd sit down and play at home. It's a different kind of enjoyment, more internal, but one I like all the same...but if the solo gigs dried up completely (not that there's a lot of 'em to begin with!) I'd still play chord melody and improvise in a solo setting for myself at home.

I love them both. I love the communication of a duo. I love the freedom and challenge of solo playing. Yeah, the solo gigs are more work, but I like the pay split.

These two categories make up 90% of my gigs. But if I do too much of one, I get bored.

Peace,
Kevin
