| | Follow-up Question ... favorite solo guitar CDs Hello, again, all,
I have a follow-up question: what are some of your favorite solo guitar recordings? Other than Joe Pass's Virtuoso, I never owned any (of course I have occasional solo tracks that appear on otherwise ensemble recordings ... like Wes' I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face or Days of Wine and Roses [though, come to think of it, the latter does have bass and drums].
I'm not going to specify genre, as I think I have pretty broad tastes in jazz. I'd love to hear what some folk's favorites are.
Thanks!

| | Ted Greene's Solo Guitar album is an absolute must-have for solo guitarists.
Also check out Kenny Poole - Deep End of the Pool (do a Google search) is awesome!
And George Van Eps
Don't forget anything by Lenny Breau. Pat Metheny's One Quiet Night (solo Baritone guitar with odd tuning) great for a new age-ish sound, or his New Chautauqua album (although he over-dubs himself).

| | I'd like to add Tuck Andress on Reckless Precision and Martin Taylor on Artistry. Ron Eshte, Bucky Pizzarelli, and Howard Morgen are great too. Hank Mackie is wonderful but doesn't record much.
Peace,

| | Johnny Smith. Mosaic put out an excellent set of remastered Johnny Smith, which included his solo guitar recording. Also on Mosaic, I was fortunate to grab onto the complete Nat King Cole trio recordings. That is the Nat King Cole I enjoy listening to.

He recorded a few cheesy pop tunes so everyone thinks that that is what he is all about. Imagine if all everyone thought of when they thought of Was were those cheesy Verve recordings: "Goin' out of My Head," "California Dreamin'," etc.
Be sure and also check out the trio recordings Cole did with Buddy Rich and Lester Young - smokin' stuff.
Peace,

| | My Shinig Hour by Howard Alden
also there is a solo CD by Harry Leahey floating around out there. Grab it if you get the opportunity
Then there's the COncord Release with a set by Johnny Smith and George Van Eps
Of course Jimmy B did a solo LP recently
I don't think Vic Juris has any solo discs out but he has some excellent duo CD's. Vic SHOULD do a solo CD. He does enough solo gigs |

| | Funny, for as much solo guitar as I play/gig--I sure don't like listening to too much of it!
The Luis Bonfa suggestion is a great one, as is the Van Eps stuff.
My favorite is probably Ted Greene's. Where a lot of other guys use the solo format to show you everything they have, Ted plays songs. Then you listen closer, and realize--"Holy crap! That's one person."
For one off the beaten path (well, just a little) Ralph Towner's timeline is lovely... |

| | Oh boy, I don't have enough time to answer this one....Pat Metheny, One Quiet Night. Baritone guitar with third and fourth strings one octave higher than normal. Brilliant stuff.
Several albums by Stanley Jordan, idiosyncratic tapping style. Way outside the norm, but gorgeous all the same.
Joe Pass has a bunch of stuff, as previously mentioned. Not a big fan of his tone, but oh, my! what he does!
It's not jazz, but I have to mention Ben Woolman, Leo Kottke, Peter Lang, John Fahey.
Earl Klugh has some beautiful stuff.
I gotta go to bed. More later.
Play on!
