Newbie! Hello from Ireland!!

Hi all,
Ive decided to check out jazz for the first time after returning to guitar after quite a few years. Just wondering can anyone point me in the right direction after 2-5-1 progressions?

Cheers

Newbie!

Hi Folks, I hope Ger doesn't mind me introducing myself in his thread but I too am from Ireland and would like to say "hello" to the forum. I'm amazed by the amount of information here and would just like to thank all the people who have contributed their knowledge to produce such an incredible resource. I'm sure there are lots of people better informed than I am as to where Gertheman should direct his attention to move beyond the II,V,I progression. I'm here to learn a little about what lies beyond the pentatonic minor so I won't be much help to him. take care John

Don't tell me you forgot to bring the Whiskey!

Since I'm here, welcome Gents.

If you don't have $60 to try out (& download from) Jimmy Bruno's
Guitar Institute then try 'Mickey Baker's Complete Course in
Jazz Guitar, Volume 1." About $8, and a grand tradition.

All the best.

Hi there,
If you read and write standard music notation, the best thing is to transcribe and/or compose ii-V-I licks, then learn them in 12 keys in the context of a tune that has lots of ii-V-I progressions like "Autumn Leaves" or "I Love You".

Attached are a few examples - some original and some derived from canonical recordings. These are all for C major, but of course could be transposed or changed to minor or altered in various ways.

If you study these carefully, you'll see that the essential thing is to combine scale fragments, arpeggios, and chromatic approaches to chord tones while trying to keep the chord tones on strong beats. Add a little rhythmic interest and off you go.

Once you have a dozen or so of these licks fluenty in your musical vocabulary (this will take a long while) you'll eventually start to be able to 'hear' the voice leading happen and get creative with the licks in the moment.

Cheers,

Jared
