I like a lot of different periods of art, but my favorite painters are mark rothko, helen frankenthaler, alice neel and ed paschke.

I guess to pick a favorite period of time, I like abstract expressionism, but muh more like rothko's color field paintings than pollock (but i appreciate action jackson as well!)

as far as channeling creative energy, i think painting is very much like jazz, and i feel if i'm currently working on a paining that inspires me I'm likely playing better guitar as well...i think it's about keeping all creative outlets open.

In the early 70's I went to art school, the first day one of the guys came up to me and asked: "I guess you're a guitar player!?" Well yes was my answer but how did you know? "I could tell by the way you look", he said.

Later I understood that many of the art students were musical persons too, so I guess there's a connection there between art and music. I didn't become an artist but have been working in a kind of creative field all my life where the early art studies were great help when I later worked in the silkscreen- and sign business. I guess that music and art uses the same half of the brain - is it the right or the left?

Right Brain!I'm actually the chair of a "school within a school" here where I teach called "A.R.T.", which stands for "Accentuating Right-Brain Thinking." We cater to the more creative students, offering electives for upperclassmen in advanced art, graphic design, music and culinary arts.Music, actually, is a whole brain activity--that's why it's so cool.

absolutley!

betty edward's "drawing on the right side of the brain" (for actual art making)

kenny werner's "effortless mastery" (my favorite)

and anything by mihaly czsikzentmihaly concerning the process called "flow."

I've also read "the artist's way" (author's name slips my mind) but I found it a little too "spiritual."

also, phillp toshio sudo's "zen guitar" is a very light, but very pleasant read, that actually makes ou want to go back to it and read certain passages again.
