| | Hello from Spring Hill,TN I am new to forums. I spend most of my time in my shop, but I am eager to get in touch with jazz musicians in the Nashville scene. My shop is by appointment only, but if you are interested in visiting, let me know. I build Redentore guitars. 17" archtops, 15" archtops, 15" slimlines, and 15" carvetop electrics, also some small body acoustics. I am always open to talk about guitars! |

| | Welcome to the party. What's the non-country scene like in Nashville? Sometimes I think of moving there, but the couple of times I've visited (it was only for a couple days) it seemed pretty over-saturated with country music. If you're into that scene, I mean no disrespect, but that just isn't my cup of tea. |

| | Nashville is also headquarters for the Christian music industry, so there is a lot of that also. I have heard in the past there has been some live jazz, but I haven't been there in about 5 years. |

| | Thanks, Derek. That scene is a pretty significant part of what's drawing me there, but I also keep hearing things like Larry Carlton lives there and plays around town to keep his chops up. Also, aren't the Wootens from there? And Bela Fleck? Those kinds of players (well, more Larry Carlton and the Wootens) also have my interest piqued. |

I do know Phil Keaggy lives there, and he is as good a player as it gets. Last time I saw him there (5 years ago), he was doing his acoustic looping thing. Was just mesmorizing to watch/hear. |

| | Jazz guys in nashville Larry Carlton is playing at a Leiper's Fork craft festival (where he lives) on May 1. A few builders (me, too!) will be displaying. Andy Reiss (great player!) does a western swing with the Time Jumpers and Vince Gill every Monday night at the Station Inn. Chuck Yamek (played with G. Benson) is also a Nashville guy to look for ( great CD "Feels So Right"). Denny Jiosa, Pat Bergeson, Mel Deal, Shane Roberts, Scott Alexander, Michael Ripoli,Lloyd Wells, Mundell Lowe,Chuck Schlacter, Mike Gallaher,- all great local jazz players. Find their websites and check out their schedules. Some restaurants like Bosco's, Sapphire, Razz's, and others have jazz. Hey Derek, you're from KC - do you know Tom Pender? Does Ida Macbeth still perform? Steve Cardenas? I lived in KC from 1980 to 1985, then moved back to Nashville. Anyway, there is a jazz presence here. |

I would love to see him in a night club. Yeah, I have met Tom, know Steve Cardenas personally. He and the guy I studied with locally, both studied with John Elliot (taught everyone in KC jazz for decades, including the Metheny brothers). Haven't seen him in 4-5 years though. Ida does perform occassionally. Lots of great players here.
Yes, the jazz scene is steady, but small here. With the National Jazz and Blues museum here, and the Blue Room attached to it, there are regular shows. Plus you have old standbys like Jardine's, the Phoenix, and the Gem Theater. I play CM in a couple of restaurants in Jackson Co., and there are pockets of jazz everywhere.
Karrin Allison was just in town for a couple of shows, and apparently did very well. She had Danny Embry (local guy, Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66) in the guitar chair. Kevin Mahogany came back recently (another local), and Bobby Watson is still the jazz chair at UMKC.
Since KC is one of the historical hotspots of jazz, we pride ourselves in continuing that tradition, so any number of touring pros regularly come thru town. I saw Jim Hall, John Pizzarelli, Pat Metheny, John Scofield, Kenny Werner, and Pat Martino here within a year's time, in recent years. |

| | Thanks for the heads up, Jazzboxmaker. Derek, I saw Karrin Allison about a year ago or so here (St. Louis) and I'm pretty sure she had a local guy playing guitar for her. I don't know about the rest of the band, though. It seems interesting to have a traveling band with everything but guitar. |

And yeah, there is a jazz presence here in Nashville, but it is small for a town full of musicians. The players in town just don't support music for music's sake; they only get out if they are 'networking' for a gig. Raashan Barber's El Movimento is so incredibly badass, and they can't get gigs or build an audience locally. And that is just one example. I mean Herbie Hancock came to the Ryman last year and played to a 3/4 house. The Ryman ain't that big. And I recognized everyone in the audience it seemed. It just seems like it needs to be better, based on the fact that there are a blue MILLION players in town.
