Newbie! New member - David Pugh

Hello Everybody:

My name is David Pugh and I'm from Bryan, Texas. I'm a retired college professor who loves jazz guitar. My favorite players are Pat Matheny, Lee Ritenour, and Kenny Burrell. I've played the guitar for a long time but I'm not very good and I'm very untrained. I'm trying to teach myself how to read music and play a few decent jazz tunes.

Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

I taught Urban Planning at Texas A&M University for 30 years. I'm a professor emeritus but I still teach one land use law course a year.

Hello David, I'm new within this great community myself. Have you found that because of your dedication to your work within urban planning, have you found difficulty in finding free time in which to dedicate practice with the guitar? I can empathise to a degree. I do feel that if we do have limited space and time to set aside for practice there can still be alot of ground to catch up on over someone who may have all day to practice. A well structured and focused daily practice session over an hour or two can pay bigger results than a day, in contrast with an individual who might meander and noodle knowing that they have near unlimited time and space. Are you akin to the opinion that, arguably, time is a guitar player's biggest motivational constraint?

That aside, what's your favourite Metheny recordings? I picked up a compilation guitar jazz album a long time ago and the very last track is by Pat Metheny. It's a live piece and it features just himself playing these wonderful minor/major diatonic, yet partly dissonant arpeggios with an underlying bass pedal tone. He also plays the keyboard intro from the Offramp recording James unaccompanied and it's breath-taking.
