Newbie! Hi there... just joined :) - PTA, RSA

Hi there, fellow wire-choir members!

I'm from Pretoria, South Africa and just want to say "hi" to all the other guitarists on the forum...

I've been playing for a while, mostly blues and rock - but I'm trying to get into/understand jazz as my musical tastes have seemed to have changed over the years. Jazz as a a musical style seems to have to many genres and sub-divisions so I'm feeling my way around (almost virginal territory for me): it seems that every jazz guitarist I see/research - I enjoy and has so much to offer that I'm struggling to find a style that suits me as a starting point as they are all brilliant...to date:
Guitarists I really enjoy: Tommy Emmanuel; Joe Pass; Pat Metheny; Lee Ritenour; (Q: do all these guys have something in common style-wise - other than being totally awesome on guitar?)
Not so fond of: Be-Bop; hectic fusion; (although 'never say never' - suggestions please!)
Styles I enjoy: classic dixie-land (love the sound of the orchestration); Acid Jazz (not too heavy); classic standards done really well or reworked/reharm-ed to spike the interest anew.

Any pointers to specific tracks/guitarists/styles would be muchly appreciated - looking forward to your feedback with thanks in advance for helping a newbie find his feet!

Ciao4now
Mark

Welcome aboard Mark. Pretty diverse group of musicians you mention, so not sure of any recommendations. I do not see a corellation between them, other than of course they are all wonderful players.

There is lots of discussion here about all sorts of players, and typically you can find clips of them, whether living or dead, on youtube.
