Forum newbie saying hello
I'm a self-taught guitarist/bassist with 30 years experience on and off, including stints of working with rock, pop, blues, funk, and improvised music other than jazz.
Although bass is my first instrument I've now decided to put in some proper study of jazz guitar, on the expectation that my improved understanding of theory & technique will pay off for bass too.
My main jazz enthusiasms are
bass: Pastorius, NHOP, Dominique di Piazza
guitar: Joe Pass, Django, Bireli Lagrene
My first practical steps are to learn chord voicings and tunes in the Manouche/gypsy jazz genre, and learn a load of Django tunes. I've been to a couple of workshops which have been a good start. What I would like to build is an ordered list of tunes to master, to work in a small band in this genre, so any tips from you good folks on web resources or other threads I may not have found yet would be great!
I'm very fortunate to be having a guitar built to my spec at the moment by local luthier
Richard Bartram. It will be a flat-top acoustic with modern construction, but shaped a la
Macaferri, the idea being to get something versatile enough to do types of jazz other than Manouche.
My other kit amounts to a Takamine NP-15C, an
Ibanez Artcore AG-85, a Fender Champion 600, and a Musicman Sterling bass with Trace Elliot GPX 1215 combo.
Looking forward to participating here.
