Default 1st post

Hello all, I like this forum, lot's of good info and advice. To be honest I can't play jazz, but I've recently started listening and studying. I always loved the playing of guys like Wes Montgomery. Anyway after thirty years of rock. I am starting a new and challenging chapter.

I'm also looking at an Eastman 810 ce 7 string. Good Guitar ? ?. I've played sevens for a while so I figured I would continue.

You played rock on a 7 string guitar? Am I missing something here? I've never heard of that.

EDIT: And welcome aboard!

Check This Out! 7 strings

Hi BDLH,
From what I have seen there seems to to be a few rock guitarists on 7 strings, off the top of my head one name would be John Pettruci, think thats how you spell it.

Cheers Tom

I just had a thought: the 7th string on a "rock" guitar, is it an additional treble string? As we know, the 7th string on a jazz guitar is an additional bass string, usually tuned to B or A below the bottom E string.

Most of the rockers I'm familiar with use a low B on their sevens. I do know of a shredder, David Shankle that has a high A. I guess sevens are really more in the metal realm. Some use them for the low tuning, others for the extended range i.e. seven string sweep arpeggios.

You will limiting your guitar options by looking for a seven-string guitar. Most jazz players use seven-string guitars for chord melody playing, playing finger-style (like a classical guitarist) and using the extra string for bass lines. Check out people like George Van Eps on YouTube (he pioneered 7-string jazz guitar):

of course, you can play it any way you like! By the way, J Hale Music (a highly regarded store) ordered a bunch of custom Eastman El Reys made with seven strings:

The El Rey doesn't look like a traditional jazz box, but it is a hollow body (without f holes), and is a small and versatile guitar, with good feedback resistance.

BigDaddy
Thanks for the info. I'm not set firmly on a seven. Looks like J Hale has a lot of nice instruments.
