Default Hi from Richmond VA

Hello board,

I thought I would take a moment to introduce myself. I've been playing guitar for 25 years on and off. I know enough to be dangerous, but have never really dedicated myself to a large extent. I have mostly played rock and roll(Beatles, Stones, Neil Young etc.) and country (Hank Williams Sr., George Jones, Merle Haggard etc.). I was introduced to Jazz about 15 years ago by a co-worker. He turned me on to Miles Davis, and I bought Kind of Blue and Sketches of Spain, on his recommendation, and while I loved it, I don't feel I was ready for it. I'm sure I was intimidated by the complicated chord changes and music theory involved. Now, my eight year old son is interested in learning to play the guitar, so I suggested we take lessons together. I'm on the verge of 40 and ready for a new challenge. I own a Taylor 310 that I bought 12 years ago, before I got married. I will have to learn on this since I am a teacher and funds are tight! Anyway, I've been immersing myself in Jazz lately, especially some of the guitar artists that have been suggested on this forum. I've picked up music by Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, and Ed Bickert among others. I look forward to learning and getting to know some of you.

Scott

Good Morning and welcome, Scott!

What strikes me is that, from what I've read here so far, people seem to get into Jazz at the age of fourty (including myself).
What does that mean?
is it
a) a particular symptom of the Midlife crisis (that's what my wife says)
b) evidence that one gets wiser and that we are intelectually better equipped to cope with complex structures (of cause it is!)
c) a money matter - finally we are all earning enough to buy all these beautiful guitars
d) a mere coincidence?

It makes me wonder...

Ha ha Uli!! those are all very good points with the exception of making the money to buy beautiful guitars! I haven't exercised thrift when it comes to money, so unfortunately, a new box will have to be on a birthday/Christmas wish list of some sort, and in the distant future.

Welcome!

My son is learning guitar also, it's a wonderful journey to be able to share together. Although, he is far from a Jazz lover at this time...

One artist who I have listened to, but not really explored his music is Jim Hall. I am going to begin listening tonight.

Best of luck on the journey!
