Newbie! howdy

well folks,

I have been playing a little guitar for about 3 years and played rhythm guitar in a blues/classic rock band for about half of that. There isn't any jazz going on in my town with the exception of one singer, and she gigs in kc. I will be doin' some vocal lessons with her after the holidays. I was a classical violinist from 12 to 22 and was a music major for two years in college at UMKC/MWSU. gave it up because I felt it was best at the time.
I plan to start another band, but I am a weak lead player. I learned mostly through TAB because that is the common denominator on the web it seems. Every guitarist I have met used it or played by ear. I realized a year ago that I needed to revert to standard notation, but the pace of the band's set list made it impossible. I am using Filiberto's positional studies and should be finished by new year's. I have been overdoing the review of learned material because I want to know that fretboard like I know the violin fretboard. It has already paid huge dividends.
I am joining this site to learn technic mostly. I had some college theory but you folks are way over my head in the application of it as it applies to guitar. I have never heard of shell chords and such. I hope to incorporate bits and pieces of the Jazz style into my playing some day because it is so rich. but right now my focus is on the fretboard, reading, and restructuring guitar solos in the music that my next band will be playing. there is always too much to do! that is the best thing about it tho, don't you think? Q: what level player is the 30 day workout designed for? I use a pick and wonder if I could use this book.
anyway, nice to B here

Mike

Hey Mike. I am in a KC suburb, and regularly use Jody's 30 Day Workout. There are pick and fingerstyle exercises in there, but I mostly use the pick studies. What town are you living in? Welcome to the group.

Well, you get to see'em up close and personal next summer. That has to count for something. My oldest daughter is there at MWSU.
