I used to jog 5km a day since '92. About 2 years ago I bought an eliptical trainer. I got tired of almost getting run over by idiot drivers at 6:30 in the morning.

Plus my feet and knees were starting to suffer from pounding the pavement 40 minutes a day, 7 days a week.

Not a bit, but an avid cyclist (I'll have to start my own thread for that one).

I'm lucky here since I live in the countryside and mountain biking is great, which I do most everyday

I gave up running a few years ago, too tough on the knees. I still get out and do the power walk thing though.

i busted my left ankle pretty bad in a soccer match 2yrs ago, and jogging has been tough ever since. which is a bummer...jogging's a lot more fun than an elliptical in the rec room.

in the meantime, to get my cardio, i've started light boxing routines.

Former runner, but can't run any more (my time in the Chicago Marathon was 3:30 or so) after I got hit by a truck and a car while riding my bicycle through Lincoln Square two years ago.

Took out a huge chunk of my thigh muscle (yes, I was very lucky to be alive, after 5 days in a coma and 2 months in the hospital, several surgeries, intensive rehab), and there was a wound that went deep and bled for weeks, right next to my knee.

Incredibly, I can walk again, but I'm gonna have knee, foot and leg problems for my entire life, going forward--(and I had probably stronger legs than most people, thanks to bicycling and running--too bad. )

I'll tell ya what, it was an incredible joy to be able to hold a guitar on my lap without pain.

Music is a wonderful healer of the soul, too.

I'm sorry to hear this -- glad you're healing, and glad to hear music is a part of the process.

If you don't mind me asking, how were you hit? It's not that I want to hear the bloody details, but I find that (as someone who does a lot of biking in traffic -- I live in Madison, WI without a car... a cyclist-friendly city, mind you, but still...), it's good to keep a growing list of situations to watch out for and be careful of.

I got doored on Lincoln Avenue, right in front of Selzer Library---Lincoln Avenue is a very busy diagonal street where they have essentially drawn in "virtual bike lanes" in physical spaces too small to have bike lanes.

I was riding a 16 pound road bike (i.e., super light), clipped-in (egg beaters), so when I got doored, my bike came with me (couldn't clip out, as it was instantaneous). Me and my bike slammed into the side of truck (going same way--thankfully, not in front, otherwise , pure roadkill). That impact created what what known as an *open book pelvis*, which created a lot of internal bleeding (I wound up losing about 30 units--so, yeah, most of that was not even mine to lose, but lost in the ER), and my bike frame smashed into my leg and knee, causing a lot of open physical bleeding. Plus, 2 broken ankles.

Lesson: don't commute clipped in
Lesson #2: be conscious to stay as far away from parked car doors

I still ride, I love it, I couldn't imagine not riding. However, I have gained a bunch of weight that I need to take off--it's so hard, though, now. I used to be able to run and ride all day. I actually was going to train for an Iron Man triathalon.

I trail run all the time and mountain bike as well (live in Colorado), which keeps me off the streets and out of harms way unlike poor NSJ! Sorry you had to go through that.

I have taken some heinous endos on my mountain bike though, but fortunately have never suffered anything worse than cuts and bruises.

damn, NSJ, that's some story.

to your credit, i'd have never known you were only two years out of such a horrendous injury when i met you this summer. you seem to be doing well, and that's gotta be a testament to your strong will during your recovery!

well anyway I just back in doing a 2 mile run on my second day, but I went 1 mile without stopping and the other mile I ran, walked and ran, but hey I'm in my mid 50's

I hope we can keep this jogging thread going, its kind of fun hearing that not everyone sits in front of the tv these days and eats chips or sushi

Thank you, sir. And I hope to listen to your excellent playing again, too. Cheers.

I ran 6.75 miles yesterday, it is a lot of fun.
Did a half marathon last year and hoping to do one or two more this year.

im in my mid fifties
still run about 5 miles a day, 5 days a week
have gotten more leery though of running on ice after repeated thaw and freeze cycles-having fallen a couple of times and finding i no longer bounce, despite my larger bounce area-last week ran in heavy cleated approach shoes instead or running shoes after snow-was indeed tough on the ankles the next day-age takes its toll

i love to bike -

used to road bike a lot-centuries-long weekend rides along rural highway sections, on the plains as well as in the mountains
used to love it but knew that a lot a motorists would ignore you, or get close to 'give you a thrill'-(idiots do the same to folks on horse that have to ride along a road)

had 3 acquaintances get hit on thier bikes -2 while on big time sponsored rides
all needed to learn to talk and walk again

now i ride my ancient english 3 speeds only,
only on paths and trails without autos
