Default New to jazz

hello everyone,

I am new to playing jazz I've been inspired by a friend who is an accomplished
Jazz pianist.
My background is in Rock and Blues and some new age type music,
I want to get started .

Any suggestions First song i want to solo over is Cantaloupe Island
Herbie Hancock

Simple but I'd like to do a jazzy lead.

Edster San Jose

Go through the lessons. Coming from a rock/blues guitar background, you might be tempted to do some basic pentatonic stuff, but it's best to forget everything you know and start over.

I was curious, and just looked up the chord progression for that song and stumbled across this. Could be useful to you:

The orignal link is:

http://www.qmusiconline.co.uk/pdf/Ja...elon%20Man.pdf

Cantaloupe Island
Chords: Fm Db7 and Dm –
Scale Choices
F Blues – the scale of choice, as it works over all the chords. Notice
how the character of the blues scale notes changes as the chords
change. Same notes, different feel.
Fm
a) F Dorian: F G Ab Bb C D Eb – Eb Major scale starting on F
b) F Pent Minor: F Ab Bb C Eb
Db7
a) Db Mixolydian Mode: Db Eb F Gb Ab Bb Cb
b) Db Lydian 7: Db Eb F G Ab Bb Cb – the same as above but
with a G natural instead of a Gb
Dm
a) D Dorian: D E F G A B C (C major scale starting on D)
b) D Pent Minor: D F G A C
c) E Pent Minor: E G A B D – my personal favourite.
d) As the parent scale here is C Major, any arpeggio in C Major
will fit: C Major (CEG), D minor (DFA), E minor (EGB), F Major
(FAC), G Major (GBD), A minor (ACE), B dim (BDF)
e) D Phrygian: Bb Major scale starting on D
