Default Hello I'm new here

Just joined up and looking forward to good advice. I have played a mixture of Folk, Country and Bluegrass for a number of years. Now early retirement gives me time to develop a different style which I've always enjoyed listening to but never attempted having been told that it is so difficult and you need to know so much theory.

I'm learning too, the guys on here really know their stuff. You'll probably get recommended a list of books, the prevalent two for the new learner is Mark Levine's Jazz Theory (correctly titled as the jazz bible) and Mickey Baker's complete course in Jazz guitar. Although Jody Fisher also does a course 'Complete Jazz guitar method' which seems to be highly regarded.

Dirk who runs the site has tons of lessons on the main page.

In answer to your post, you do need to know lots of theory but it's not as daunting as it may seem. You just need to plug away at it. Also - a word to the wise -don't mention 'TAB' round here!!

Hi, and welcome to the group. Actually you do see the occasional bit of TAB on the site, but if you don't read music it is still a good thing to learn and makes it easier to absorb all the theory stuff. But I think Danny has the right idea in getting a good book or whatever and that should guide you pretty well and help avoid a few wrong turns maybe.
