Newbie! New member, old band director, wanna be guitar player

Hello from Norman Oklahoma,

I'm so happy to have found this site. I've been looking through it and know that I've found a treasure trove. Looking forward to meeting all of you, and hopefully picking your minds about this wonderful instrument. I'm an old sax player by training, but the guitar was my first love way back when. I'm totally confused by the instrument though. As a friend of mine says, six strings and a million possibilities.

New member and retired Principal Percussionist with Metropoliatan Opera Orchestra for 33 years, and before that graduate of New England Conservatory of Music, Boston Pops / Symphony, Tanglewood, many Gigs since a youngster playing my first love ~ Jazz Drums / Vibes.. Wound up in Opera / Symphony and now I meet a bunch of people that share similar backgrounds in Music and still love playing.. I am teaching myself Guitar and although I know all about the Music end of it, it's getting around the frets that can be very fretfull.. That's like when I was a kid with my first lesson on Vibes/Marimba/Xylophone.. look forward to hearing from one and all.. Herb

Welcome to the site, both of you. Since you both have musical backgrounds perhaps you could start by learning the chords from the Mickey Baker Book (you will hear references to this every day you come on this site). The advantage of this approach is that you will sound like a jazz player very quickly and his first 30 chords will open up a massive repertoire for you. As you would both understand about jazz, the rest of it depends on your ears and taste. Since you both have "trained ears", you are well placed.

If you learned to play the sax I'm sure you can do the same with the guitar.
Explore the guitar and you will be translating your knowledge to your new instrument soon enough.
