Newbie! New to making MUSIC my CAREER

Hey everybody! My name is Kyle and I've just recently made the decision that I want music to be the thing that I wake up everyday ready to do and not working just some job to pay the bills.

I never went to school for music, but I've been using the vast resources (public library and internet) available to me in order to make a living with music.

I also blog about the journey and offer tips, tricks, and share insights and revelations as I learn so other musicians can benefit too. Nice to meet you all and I hope to plants the seeds and grow in music!

Yes, but at least the pay sucks.

Help

I plan on getting up some YouTube videos as soon as I can. They are going to be more blues based since I'm still fresh into jazz and not as comfortable with it.

I need a portable HD video recorder that does well in crappy light situations and is sold on Amazon Any suggestions?

Welcome! Something you can plug a mic into and good in low-light. Camcorderinfo.com might be a help.

Keep working! I'm in the same boat. I want to make a living from this. There are no shortcuts. Keep practicing day and night and it WILL happen. As Pierre says: time on the instrument.
Never give up.

Practicing doesn't pay any bills. Gigging Does! Seriously, landing a gig gives you a real good idea what to work on. If it's a jazz gig pick among the simpler tunes and just make them sound good.

The biggest detriment to my income is I can read well but SIGHT reading is not good enough to just take any gig. Great readers work a lot.

Enjoy the ride!

Definitely, being able to just walk in a play whatever is put in front of you will get you the most gigs = the most money.

Giving guitar lessons can be pretty lucrative if you work at it. If you "lock in" with a client, you've got a weekly gig, potentially for a very long time. I find it rewarding too, and I think it can be done in a way where you're not just teaching Green Day songs all day long.

Giving lessons has been my career and only job for the past 10 years. I gig a bit too, but the income from that hasn't been significant enough to count for anything - I'm working hard now to fix this balance of teaching vs. gigging, but I'd still much rather be teaching than something that doesn't have to do with music at all.

Giving lessons is definitely something to look into. For me it'll be a challenge building what is essentially a small business in addition to my blog as well as continuing to improve myself as a guitarist.

Do you have any tips for someone just starting out like how to market your lessons, pricing, or keeping students excited and interested?
