Newbie! Great to be here

I've been perusing the posts for a little more than a week now and I'm finally jumping in. To all of you that post to this forum - kudos, you have got a great little community here and one and I'm excited to be able to take part.

I started playing guitar in college. (Crap - that's like 20 years ago. A lot longer ago than it is in my mind!) Originally this was just a way to hang out with friends which resulted in a lot of great times, but I'm afraid that I never progressed too far beyond that. I pick up the guitar everyday, but feel like I still play the same songs I did back then.

I recently heard the Tuck Andress version of Man in the Mirror and put me on a kick listening to Tuck Andress and Pat Metheny channels on Pandora. Now I'm looking to get an archtop and a new purpose in my playing. I'd like to start studying some theory and work on some actual technique, which I've never really had.

I'm currently playing an Alhambra 7F-CIP Flamenco guitar. I always loved playing with my fingers and I get a good sound out of this although no one is going to mistake me for an actual Flamenco player. I'd love to transfer some of my finger picking to a jazz style, but we'll see.

Anyway, glad to be here and lean more about this awesome form of music!

check these books out...

Mickey Bakers books...The Berklee Series for modern guitar...a lot of players on this site are using these books...

Jazzology is a book on jazz theory...Harmony by Walter Piston is a textbook on classical theory...gets deeper as the pages get higher in number..

time on the instrument...pierre

Thanks for the welcomes!

I'm in no rush to sell the Alhambra. I've always loved the sound of this instrument. Really, really nice.

I saw on one of the threads that the Mickey Bakers books won out as the most recommended, although there were quite a few out there that sounded great. This sounds like a good place to start for me. I also have some buddies who have studied quite a bit of guitar who I'm sure will help point me in the right direction.

Boy - isn't all about the time in. My job is pretty demanding now, but I'm looking forward to being able to spend some time on the jazz hobby. Part of what I have been thinking about is how much unstructured time I have been spending with the guitar. If I'm going to pick it up everyday might as well be moving forward instead of going in circles. I'm looking forward to that feeling of learning something difficult and new and having to work to get it.
