Default New to Jazz Forum

Hi! I've been lurking here for some time, really enjoy the wealth of information and the atmosphere. I took a crack at the December Practical Standards Study Group songs, so I figured I should finally join.

I've been playing for 7 or 8 years, with the lions share of that being classical guitar. My classical guitar playing was getting into concert level repertoire, but I was craving more interaction with other musicians, the give and take, improvisation, etc. Besides that, the many months it was taking to learn intricate new pieces started getting frustrating.

So, a few years ago, I started with some home learning material for general contemporary guitar. At first blues was my main attraction, but as I got more into it, I started appreciating the jazzier side of things, and now I enjoy learning both.

I've been working with a local instructor for a few months now, focusing on jazz and blues. I have a decent base of guitar skills and the basics of theory, but for jazz, I have a long way to go with modes, arpeggio patterns, triads, jazz chord voicings, etc.

Looking forward to getting to know you all better, and hopefully I can learn a thing or two along the way.

Welcome to the forums! If you want to learn about jazz you are in the right place. Since you have a good start, check out Matt Warnock's site. The link is at the bottom of this post. Look around really good. Matt has over 100 free lessons all geared at Jazz. Also look in the "jazz resources" section. You can spend months in there. Good luck!

Thanks for pointing out Matt Warnock's site. I'd seen it before, through ads for his "30 Days to Better Jazz Guitar Ebook", but decided against it at the time. After you reminded me of it, I checked out his main site, and found a tonne of great stuff, some of it seemingly tailored for me. I'm picking up a lot of great stuff there, and eventually got the e-book after all.
