Newbie! Greetings from Sydney, Australia

Hi all,

Just saying g'day now that I am on my end-of-year break and have time to check out this site as recommended by my friend Neill.

I came to jazz guitar quite late. I have had a guitar in the house pretty much since my teens but only started getting serious (kind of) a few years ago.

I played bass in a folk band in Canberra for a number of years and then moved to Sydney and decided to take up six string again. I bought a Telecaster (to which I had become attracted because of its simplicity) and went looking for a teacher who could get me started in a genre that would suit "the older player". I figured either country or jazz. The teacher didn't know country so I got started in jazz.

Since then I have been to various teachers and workshops and am now just trying to get a band organised with my wife (who plays piano). Our playlist has a mix of standards (including some Monk) and more modern material such as Chick Corea and maybe Flecktones.

Aside from jazz, I like to listen to lots of different music especially rootsier varieties like bluegrass, Hungarian folk or Bulgarian women's choirs.

Gear? I became a regular at the Tele page after buying the Tele and did a lot of experimentation with configuring subsequent homebrew Teles to get a mellower sound for jazz while retaining the vintage bridge. The closest I got is my Charliecaster, a Thinline with a VintageVibe Charlie Christian in the neck position. My main humbucker guitar is a 2002 ES345 retrofitted with low output VintageVibe humbuckers.

My favourite amp is my 1974 Fender Pro Reverb.

G'day mate welcome to the forum. It looks like you have a very eclectic range of musical interests. It should produce some interesting Jazz when it filters into you playing.
