Default What gets Moderated

As you all know, I took on the job of co-mod (with Derek) a few months ago. In that time, I've been called everything from saviour to mein fuhrer...so I figured I'd do another sticky to explain when I've decided to step in and when not.

Now, Derek is the spam master...I can't tell you how many times I've opened my inbox to see 20 reported posts overnight...and then I go to clean and Derek has already taken care of it. I think that goes underappreciated here, so a big shout out to Derek for keeping things flowing...I would not have the patience he does to delete all of those spam accounts.

Which leaves me to be more of the referee mod, as Dirk had asked me to do...not always fun, so here's the deal.

Our population is mostly adults here, so to a certain extent, I expect people to keep things civil and fend for themselves...I have no desire (nor the time) to turn this into some of the very over-moderated boards I see out there...

So first of all remember the common sense rules...if you wouldn't say it to someone's face, don't post it.

Any attacks that use profanity--gone.

Don't bring politics into threads that aren't political.

Ad hominem attacks are also going to be deleted.

Threads will be locked when the sparring has outweighed the content of the thread and the thread has "run it's course."

Just use common sense...and report things...9 times out of 10 when folks take things into their own hands we get a fight that was completely avoidable.

Use common sense, and happy picking, everybody. I'll continue to do my best to keep this an educational and friendaly place, just remember I'm human too.

Jeff

Jeff, I've seen you over at tdpri... I'm telequacktastic @ tdpri. I really like THIS forum as its all about the goods of playing jazz. A little more about playing the guitar and less about saddles and vintage correctedness. I'm all in!

I feel the moderators here are doing their job very well. When people decide to troll, it is rarely very serious - just the odd pissing contest, or the jazz police wanting to confiscate our archtops. Mostly things we can shrug off.
Now the spambots however are becoming a problem, either starting a dozen new threads or derailing existing threads. I posted a suggestion in another thread on possible solutions that may reduce the impact it has on the community. It might be worth trying out.
This is such a productive community that I really enjoy being a part of.
You moderators do a good job, and you deserve a heads up for that. I'm yet to see moderators here on a powertrip, abusing their power like I've seen on other forums.

To decrease the amount of spams I've offered myself to help with moderating the forums and I am now one of the mods (with Derek and Jeff) to keep the high quality of the forums.

I have about 4 years of experience with moderating another forum with a lot of users and spams so hopefully no offers anymore for boots...

I have to admit, I've never found Ugg boots at a better price than what I've seen on this forum!

Good evening, Franklin, and a Happy New Year to you and yours...

As a fairly regular 'Spam' watcher, I would like to thank you in advance for the cruel task upon which you are embarking. The 'bots are getting fairly clever these days (I've seen 'bot posts that make more sense than some real person posts on this very site..!), so you'll certainly have your work cut out to keep them all in check. If any slip through, there will be someone to indicate the fact, and ask for removal, but we shall only know of your efficiency by an absence of 'Spam' to denounce. Rest assured, however, that we are grateful for the unseen efforts of all the mods. The better you all are, the less we shall notice your work, but it is appreciated.
I've not learned that much guitar here (shame on me, I know...), but I'm really clued up now on boots..!

Please delete the thread where I was attacked by ksjazz in the period when there was no moderator. Despite my requests for moderation action, nothing happened, so I left because it was most unhealthy for me to stick around. Specifically delete the Division Between Classical and Jazz Theory thread since it contains very little valuable information to any musician and is nothing more than a black stain on your forum.

I know this is possible since I have seen similar requests from other members acted upon. Of course you don't need me around for any particular reason, but this is one thing that would make me more likely to post here. Consider this a formal request, and please understand that I would like to continue posting here from time to time.

I think a PM would be in order next time. Just a thought.

Just because you had a bad experience with someone, does that mean you cannot post here anymore? I don't see what is stopping you.

By all means, Start Posting.

PM would have been nice.

I really have no desire to go back and delete threads from over a year ago from before I was even a mod. Besides, while he didn't know how to argue, Kevin had a ton of knowledge and was essentially railroaded out of here. The first part of that thread is quite intelligent and civil.

Can't we let stuff die? Kevin hasn't been back in half a year at least...if you want to post, post. But don't make it look like I have to do you a favor so we can be graced by your presence again. Jump back in and share the valuable knowledge I know you have.

I understand your current stance and that you can't just go deleting stuff at one person's request. I also understand that when you first started to moderate you hadn't fully considered this when you deleted a thread I would rather you had not deleted.

Thank you for saying I had something worth sharing.

Which thread was that, czardas--I'd like to see if I remember it...gotta learn from my mistakes.

I have deleted some threads by request, but only when the person that started the thread requested it. Any other threads that got completely canned were either started by a Spammer or someone who ended up getting banned, or the real (for lack of a better word) shitstorms that had no posts of any real value (threads that were essentially started to cause a fight)

The Classical vs. Jazz thread contains some ugly bickering, but it also contains some intelligent arguments...were it going on in real time today it'd be one I'd watch as close as possible, and probably have to pick out some posts as we went.

Things have seemed pretty good natured around here lately, though, with a couple of exceptions (but even the arguments have been of the more intelligent variety...with one notable exception...)

Also, a big thanks to Dirk for downloading a new SPAM filter which has really cut our spam down (virtually eliminated the bots, at least) and to Franklin52 who's doing a great job keeping the boards clean and organized.

It was a thread where a well respected player gave a demonstration video which I thought was excellent except for one rhythmic detail concerning accentuation. My criticism within that thread was worded in a tactless manner. The OP took offence and I apologized. Then you deleted the thread at the OP's request after one other person agreed with my opinion. Jog your memory?

We were both deleting my posts at that time. LOL

Regarding the other (ksj) thread, I don't see arguing about the definition of the word diminished as being intelligent. It's beginners theory. I'm grateful to OneWorld for putting things straight, and on reflection, perhaps the thread should stay. I was right about one thing, and maybe much more. In any case the accusations levelled against me were both unfounded and unwarranted.

I realize that moderating any kind of public forum is a nightmare task, and I'm glad that you are here to do it now. I just wish there had been a moderator around at the time, because slander and defamation is bad enough, and even worse when based on false information I am not who I say I am. Godverdomme!

Well I have no idea if my responce was useful.

Before I leave for good, I'd like to point out that the wiki article about bebop scales, which was a complete mess, has now been scrapped. I can only presume that the world of jazz theory is in a state of turmoil. The very reason I came here was to ask for clarity. I just got told I was stupid. Of course, I was right to criticise the article.

Sometimes you just can't find resolution, and it isn't always possible to do everything in a dignified manner. While I got punch drunk from my earlier encounters on this forum, I have to some degree managed to restore my composure. Dignity's still in a state of flux tho.

You can't just go around throwing punches and walk away without any comeback. Turning a blind eye because you are under the impression that the perpetrator is (or was) a valuable asset to the forum is your choice. Well that's all I have to say.

Dude, what is the problem? You seem to have no problem posting here. Why don't you start another thread and go from there? And don't be so sensitive, this is an online forum. Some people are jerks, others are just in a hurry, but most are cool. I really do not understand why you are keeping this conversation going.
