Default Great morning...

Nothing to do with guitar...

Man, I went out for my morning run. I've been battling plantar fasciitis for a while so I've been skipping my hilly trail run, but decided to hit it this morning. I'm jogging along this well manacured path through a grove of redwoods (a part of the trail that is so charming that I call it "The Enchanted Forest") and it starts to hail like an MF. I mean, it's just pouring down. But the stones are small, and I have my fleece pullover and a running cap so I just snug up and keep going.

It was just such a beautiful moment. I thought, "Man, it's great to be alive." I just had to share that with someone.

Peace,
Kevin

I'm just about to go for my afternoon run; 68 and sunny, and hopefully no hail, though I've been hit in the head so many times that it wouldn't matter anyway.

Try foot stretching exercises with a towel. 30 seconds on / 10 off. 3 sets , 3 times a day. Works for me.

That's a great attitude. Like the old saying goes: Happiness isn't having what you want, it's wanting what you have. We all have things that we wish we could do - but if we focus on those, we forget to enjoy the things that we do have.

I guess I got this perspective from working on the cruise ship for so long. I'd see these people come out and be miserable because things didn't go exactly the way they'd planned - the tour they wanted was sold out, or the cabin was too small, or it rained on Tuesday, or the argued with their spouse about how much to spend. I would just roll my eyes in disbelief. Life is kind of like a cruise - you just have to take it as it comes and enjoy it for what it is, because when it's over, that's it.

For non-runners, we're talking about the plantar fasciitis here, a strain in the connective tissue that covers the bottom of the foot. It is a painful nagging injury that can take 6-12 months to heal.

Yeah, I'm notoriously bad about stretching, except for a little dynamic stretching before a run. I've cut back on mileage for the last several months, got a Strassburg sock and where it to bed and sometimes around the house, I stretch out the PF when I wake up, I tape the foot when I run and avoid hills and trails, and roll it on a frozen water bottle. I've heard about the towel stretching and should do that to. I should lose some weight too.

I guess it's getting better - when I first got it I was limping. Now it's just a twinge of slight pain if I let my toes point (letting the PF relax) for too long. It almost never bothers me when I'm running. I'm hoping to get ready for the SF marathon at the end to July, but I have barely enough time to properly prepare, so nothing can go wrong.

Yeah, I just can't get that moment out of my head. The only thing that would have made it better would be if some deer were crossing the trail. That's happened on a few night runs, but never in a hail storm. And when I run in in the park by the bay, there are lots of skunks that come out at night - it's a little unnerving at first, but they've left me alone so far.

Peace,
Kevin

Yo,

I've been jogging or working on an eliptical since 1991, 3 miles a day, 6-7 days a week. I know what plantar fasciitis is as I get it. As a matter of fact my wife had to have surgery on both feet to help with the pain. She didn't do the exercises. I do. No surgery for me and no flair ups. Do the exercises. I know what I'm talking about here

Cool, I'll give it a shot. I was up to 25-30 miles/week with 10-15 mile long runs when PF struck. It may have been related to the fact that I was trying to switch to a non-heel-strike - that put less strain on the joints (and felt good and sped me up a little) but it puts a little more strain on the PF. I should have eased into it. Now I'm down to 10-12 miles/week with 6 mile long runs. I figure to seriously do a marathon, I need to get up to at least 40 mile weeks. If I keep to the "10% per week" rule I can just barely be ready for a July 31 marathon.

But if I'm going to start upping the mileage, then I definitely need to start doing all the PF tricks. I'll keep a towel next to my desk. I also saw some self-administered ART stuff that is supposed to do some good.

How long ago was your PF? Do you still have residual pain, you know, like the first step out of bed?

Peace,
Kevin

I first got it 2 years ago after putting on weight. I did the exercises and it went away after a month. The Dr said to keep exercising

I get a flare up now and then. But I still do the exercise every morning after working out.

You should probably do the towel exercise before you get out of bed.

My wife has to use orthodics even though she had surgery. If she doesn't the pain comes back

Glucosamine Sulfate, Chondroytin, and MSM - 3 supplements that can really help tendon pain. Weight loss also helps.

I have battled Achilles Tendonitis since 2003. Eventually, I had to back off all sports that require hard cuts and jumping (i.e.) basketball, football, and soccer - straight ahead running is OK however.

Take Care, Folks.
