Newbie! Newbie from Kent, UK

Hi Everyone,

I've been playing guitar in rock, pop, blues in bands for over 20 years and have been 'messing around' with Jazz for my own enjoyment on and off for a few years. My 2011 New Year's resolution was to really get into my jazz palying seriously...so here I am, working hard and ejoying the progress!

I've learned so much from this site already, thanks Dirk.

Happy picking

Pete

I met a guy from Kent you may have heard of -- Jon Cleary, keyboardist. He was doing a show with Allen Toussaint and Henry Butler. I ran into Mr. Cleary in the lobby. He told me about looking around for early 20th century Cuban ragtime, kind of like the early latin jazz, a seed that sprouted the same time as jazz in the US. Records are quite rare but there's a fair amount of sheet music if you have time to hunt it down. Sounds like ragtime with a lilt.

Cool guy, great player. Toured with Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, Allen Toussaint etc. Records with all kind of people. Has his own band, also. A happening guy in his adopted home town, New Orleans, and they have high standards down there. People of Kent can be proud.

Saw him last year (?) with Scofield in the Piety St. band. Couldn't believe he was one of ours, the way he played and sang, he sounded right at home with that N'Awlins groove!!
