Default Guthrie

Hi, All.

I had a unique guitar experience the other evening when I went up to San Francisco to hear Guthrie Govan. The first half of the event was a Suhr guitar clinic during which Guthrie demoed several Suhr models, emphasizing the tonal differences between different body woods, fingerboard woods, pick-ups, etc.

The second half of the event was a live show in which Guthrie led a band of crack musicians--a drummer, a bassist, and a second guitarist--through a dynamite set, a set all the more amazing because Guthrie hadn't met this set of bandmates until earlier that very day!

If you're not familiar with Guthrie, you're in for a treat. In addition to being a true virtuoso, he's almost a master teacher.

Matt

Very cool. I like Guthrie's playing, a lot. Sounds like a great event.

I like Guthrie's playing too. It's a pity those Suhr's cost more than a racehorse. I'm thinking of going the cheap route: put a set of Suhr FL p'ups in one of my Strats. The FLs are the pups from the Scott Henderson model.

Thanks for introducing me to his playing; I admit I never heard of him before reading this thread. He's great.

As you might know, Suhr has announced and (I believe) has started to ship a more entry-level product line called Rasmus. You can find lots of announcements and forum references to the Rasmus guitars online.

At the Guthrie event I attended, they showed a prototype of their Guthrie Govan signature Rasmus model, which they said would be available in the second half of this year. Guthrie demoed it and it sounded quite fine.

They didn't announce a price, but at what I guess will be an MSRP of approx $1300 and a street price of around $1000, the Guthrie Rasmus guitar would be bumping into the low-mid end of the "better" Strat models. I doubt that Guthrie would allow them to put his name on an instrument that wasn't very good and that didn't conform to Suhr's QA specs, however.

I also didn't realize that Suhr also makes effects and amps. In Guthrie's hands, the guitars, effects and amps all sounded great, of course.
