Default New to Jazz

Hey I caught this forum browsing and I hope it suits my needs as a basic beginner of jazz. I am here seeking comments, ideas, and mostly answers to many of my questions ranging from developing better comping chords and rhythms to developing better sight reading skills. Currently I am enrolled at SFCC, earning a AA transfer to a four-year university where I intend on studying music with guitar performance spearheading my pursuit. In addition to taking classical/jazz private lessons from Kyle Smith, this is my first quarter of playing in Big Band, a concept that is utterly foreign (but not enjoyable) to me. I come and ask humbly for your knowledge and patience for I am young and ignorant! I want to know this stuff, and develop a better command of the fretboard with my chords.

Anywho, I will poke around here looking currently for any info on building chords such as: Db13(#11), D7(#5#9) D9sus, and anything that is not a seventh or sixth chord. I want to know how you go about choosing which notes to voice in the chord and which ones to omit. If anyone can point anything out to me it would be great to bounce back Q&A, but for now the hunt is on!

Thanks again!

Welcome farmer. May you jazz long and prosper!

As for your chord questions, post any questions you have in the Comping, Chords and Chord Progressions section. This section doesn't get as much traffic as the "Chords"
