I consider myself a 'part-time pro' - sounds better to me than 'semi-pro'.
Anyway, I have a friend who's a dedicated amateur. He doesn't gig but loves to play. We jam sometimes at his house. He's got a lot of toys to play with.
The other day he said to me, "I'm a good crappy guitarist, but you're a crappy good guitarist." LOL - talk about a left-handed compliment!
My take on this is - if you're not getting paid, do YOU like how and what you play? Then, do people listening like what you play? If you are paid, do the listeners, and owners of the venues, like your playing enough to ask you back, and pay you again?
Um ... thanks for the responses, but I think you guys may be missing my point. I'm not looking for validation here; I just wanted to share my friend's amusing comment.
OK, I've got to come clean here:
He didn't actually use the word, "Crappy." He used a synonym for it which starts with, "Sh...," but I wanted to keep my posting language within the realm of acceptable civility.
