Newbie! Greetings from Washington State

Started a beginners course in January, when I reached the end of it I started looking for a Jazz site so that I could focus on Jazz, maybe a little blues, so here I am, I am appreciative of this site because there is no money for books and lessons. I have my moms old guitar and been doing the freebie lessons since the beginning. Mom passed away in January. See the connection.

Thanks for listening

Mezzy

Welcome to the group Mezzy. Sorry to hear about your mom, but what a great way to keep her memory alive.

Yeah my Dad literally tears up everytime that I talk about how the guitar is progressing. So I am appearntly to the point (being told by other people) that since I have the basics down it is time to start playing songs. One friend told me that if he hears me practice scales, chord progressions or the strum, pick out and strum one more time he will start taking a ruler to my knuckles. I have always had a fondness of the blues and the jazz. Although I thought that I wasn't going to be able to play Jazz because I need to use a pick and I have heard that Jazz guitarists don't use a picks. Anyway thanks for the response. Payday after next I will go out and pick up a Real Book and start going to town. Although if you don't mind me asking... How accurate are internet chords and tabs until then?

Couple of things. First, internet tunes/chords are for the most part horrible, unless you are on a pay site. Those typically have paid the royalties and can use the proper music. So I would wait until you get the Real Book.

Second, plenty of jazz players use a pick, in fact the majority I would guess. What style of playing within jazz are you referring to?

After my Mom had passed and had taken delivery of her Guitar if I was asked if I was going to finger pick or pick pick. I had stated that with the nature of my job I needed to keep one hand callous free so I was going to use a plectum. The individual said that all genere's were open with the exception of Jazz, because Jazz guitarist finger pick. It was just recently that I found out that a pick was an option.

And I will heed your advice and wait two more weeks when I can get a real book.

Again thanks for the responses
