Default Rubbish Weekend

Saturday Morning, played a gig with the Workshop Band....not very well either. Couldn't get to grips with comping on a couple of songs, though Ithought my two solo spots (Cherokee, Sonnymoon for Two) went well.

Saturday evening, up to London to see the Pat Metheny Quartet. Except that they'd closed the Blackwall Tunnel, one of the major river crossings in East London... the resulting traffic jam ensured that what should have been a 45 minute journey (and indeed, was - on the way home) took 2 hours, and we arrived in time to see the last three songs and two encores. The band was brilliant, which made missing the first hour of the gig even more painful.

Then on Sunday afternoon, got an e-m telling me that our recently-arrived drummer....had just become our even more recently-departed drummer. Just when we were getting somewhere. B******S!!

And the footie was cr@p as well.

It's got to get better, hasn't it???

Well-Footie season starts soon-you don't support Arsenal, do you? If so-it could be only the start of it!!

Seriously-think of your drummer leaving as an opportunity, not a set-back.

Thanks Bill, but we had so much difficulty finding him, that I'm beginning to believe that the only opportunity is that of going to a drum-less trio!!

Having said that, I got a call yesterday from one of the saxophonists who was at the Workshop band gig on Saturday (only turns up imtermittently, not a regular at all) and he asked if I'd be interested in sitting in with a Big Band with which he plays. Only rehearsing rather than gigging, but a good learning opportunity so I went along and gave it a try. Not so much my sort of music, but good experience, a real challenge, and an chance to improve my sight reading and ability to play from scratch a tune I don't know.

So, maybe turned a corner then.

BUT on the footie front...my employer has today launched their sponsorship of Man U. As as a diehard Scouser born & bred, I'm finding all the "Unitedisms" a little hard to take..........Since my firm's headquarters is in Chicago, I wonder what would have happened if their marketing exercise had gone for a deal with the New York Yankees? Big name, worldwide brand....... and all those Cubs/Sox fans up in arms at their desks.
