| | New Yorkers please! Hi folks,
My girlfriend and I will fly over to NY this July. So I would be glad about some tips:
Best places to go on July 4th?
Which jazz clubs to go? I don't want to visit the typical tourist jazz clubs like Blue Note or Village Vanguard. Already on my list are Cafè Wha? and The 55 Bar.
Good (and not to expensive) places to have sea food (dinner)?
Thanks in advance!
Cheers, Chris |

| | The Jazz Gallery is my favorite venue but I go wherever the prices are manageable and artists of interest are playing.
Best bet is searching the calendar on the All About Jazz website.
Look around also for free outdoor music series. I know Celebrate Brooklyn is doing a Bitches Brew Revisited show and Central Park Summerstage has McCoy Tyner and Stanley Clarke later this month perhaps before you get here. Jazzmobile does a series at different outdoor locations throughout the summer.
I'm a vegetarian and so I can't be of much help for seafood restaurants. |

| | Here's a link for you New York City Jazz Club Bible - nyc jazz
Ther are two big seafood restaurants in NYC. Unfortunately I can't remember thier names. But I will look.
Don't forget the fireworks. I don't know which river they'll be done on this year. Last year was the Hudson River. This year may be the East River.
Maybe Bako knows.
Here's a decent link. The Hudson Cafe looks interesting. Live music. Might be jazz. http://www.gayot.com/restaurants/bes...nts_6_1ny.html
Will you be guitar shopping as well? Don't forget to check out Rudy's (2 locations) and Mandolin Brothers on Staten Island. Take the ferry.
FYI theres a great sheet music store on the right of Carnegie Hall , (looking at the front of CH) At leat it was there 10 years ago )

@John: concerning sheet music, do you mean Patelson's Music House?
No, I won't shopping guitars, I have spent a lot on decent gear in the past two years. But I plan to shop some clothing. Especially jeanswear is much cheaper in the US than in Europe.
Cheers,

| | I don't remember the name of the music store. But stop by Rudy's just to see what he has on display. I think he's still on 48th near 6th Ave
If you're buying clothes you can save 8.25% on sales tax by taking a bus to any number of Malls in New Jersey. NY taxes clothing. NJ does not.
The Newport mall in Jersey City is close to NYC. I think they even have soem sort of ferry service between lower Manhatten and Jersey City.
Just an FYI
Also if you're doing any sight seeing I always recommend the Bronx Zoo and The Brooklyn Aquarium at Coney Island. It's recently been updated. |

I might shop for the Ligon jazz theory books. I've to other books written by him, I really like. And I have to stay away from the Sadowsky show room...
Thanks for the tax-tip! |

Rudy's is still on 48th street and they opened a great new store in Soho, on Broomstreet. He has 23 old D'anjelico's on display there. |

| | @ Baltar: thanks for the tip!
Concerning prices for clothing: a Levis 501 is $40 in NY and $100 here in Austria. So NY prices for clothing are ok with us. On the other hand restaurants, coffee, musical theaters, etc is cheaper here in AUT... | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
