Learning how to play chord melody is one of the most sought after skills by jazz guitarists of all levels and musical tastes. It’s one of those concepts that’s both alluring and intimidating in its design.
In this video, jazz guitarist Greg O’Rourke demonstrates the possibilities that studying chord melody produces on the guitar. He also demonstrates concepts that are covered in our course Complete Chord Melody.
Now, as Greg is a master performer, the level of this arrangement is above what’s expected of you when studying the eBook. But, it gives you an idea of what can be accomplished when you build strong chord melody fundamentals.
Check out the video and the arrangement below to learn more about how you can create your own cool-sounding chord melodies.

very nice chord melody…I can’t afford not to learn that song…
Great.. Congratulations.
thanks for this really a big help God bless and more power.
Greg, can you put up the”back home in indiana” lesson again?
Hi there Ben, the lesson you refer to is still on this site, it’s called ‘Chord Melody Made Easy’ – here’s the link: https://www.jazzguitar.be/blog/chord-melody-guitar/
Great job on the book. I started Jan 1 and have methodically gone through every exercise up through #62 (as of today). Some aspects for me are tremendously difficult, while other are almost easy. That means you’re doing a super job balancing the teaching. I do have one small suggestion for the audio files – on exercises where you specify a rhythm like Charleston or Syncopation or “8th plus two 16ths” it would be handy to include a small mp3 of you verbally counting behind the playing. Just a thought.
Also – kudos on your way of suggesting alternative fingering. Nice to try different things, plus good to see how a player can adjust for comfort or personal style.
Thanks for your feedback on the book Randy, glad you’re enjoying it! Cheers, Greg
Hello,
I am a guitar practitioner. My performance level is somewhat intermediate. However, I have problems reading and understanding musical tablature, even theory. I need an easy, simple guide to overcoming my struggles.
Hi Dickson,
This site http://www.jazzguitar.be has a wealth of resources on improving your guitar skills and they also have a lot of great eBook publications on all aspects of jazz guitar, I can highly recommend them. Cheers, Greg
Hi! Very nice! I recently bought the chord melody book, and it’s fantastic, from the very beginning up to Joe Pass’ lines. Just a question, not exactly about the chords: which guitar model is Greg using in the video?
Thanks Jesse! Re: the guitar, it’s an Ibanez Artcore Expressionist Vintage.
YES YES YEeeeee
WHAT SONGS ARE IN THE BOOK?
Thank you Greg……really inspiring arrangement/performance.
The book is great too!
I’ve been working with it the past several days and so far I’m impressed at how you present
so much material in such a thorough and logical order. Totally worth the price.
It’s been a real blessing….hurry up and get working on your next ebook.
Sincerely,
Anthony
PS What model Ibanez are you playing ?
Thanks for your kind feedback and encouragement Anthony! Re: the guitar, it’s an Ibanez Artcore Expressionist Vintage.
